Swimming is often recommended as an ideal form of exercise for people with bleeding disorders for a few different reasons. To begin with, swimming allows one to strengthen their muscles in a way that doesn’t put weight on the joints, and therefore reduces the likelihood of bleed due to impact or pressure. It also enables one to get a full body resistance workout from the water, from legs and core to shoulders and back, all which can be adjusted to varying intensity. Lastly, the resistance of the water limits one’s speed and momentum, eliminating the risk of getting an injury from impact. Because of its low impact nature, swimming can often be practiced and enjoyed throughout one’s whole life.
While swimming has been deemed one of the safest forms of physical activity for individuals with bleeding disorders, it’s still necessary to consider the risks associated with the sport. Swimmers who have hemophilia are prone to typical overuse injuries caused from repetitive exercise, and may have excess stress placed on an already arthritic or target joint.
