A Community Coming Together in San Diego
As the warm San Diego sun greeted diverse community members, clinicians, advocates, and industry leaders this March, the 2025 Hemophilia Federation of America (HFA) Symposium opened its doors at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina. Over four days—from March 27 to 30—attendees were treated to an extensive program of educational sessions and networking opportunities, and to a celebration of resilience, hope, and unity that speaks volumes about the strength of the bleeding disorders community.
This year’s overarching theme—”Navigating the Future, Together“—was evident in every moment. From the high-energy welcome in the lobby where registration tables buzzed with conversation and anticipation, to late-night sessions under San Diego’s starry skies, the event was a vibrant tapestry of inspirational experiences. Whether arriving from the East Coast, the Great Plains, or nearby states, every participant felt welcomed as part of a larger family striving for better health outcomes and improved quality of life.
Inspiring Programming and Unforgettable Sessions
The Symposium’s agenda was a masterclass combining educational depth with community engagement. With over 40 sessions running concurrently, the program was designed to address the myriad needs of individuals living with or caring for those with bleeding disorders. Key sessions illuminated the latest treatments and clinical research, while others focused on the more personal aspects of living with a bleeding disorder.
One of the standout sessions was “Therapies on the Horizon,” where expert panelists looked into emerging treatment options—from novel factor therapies to breakthrough non-factor approaches. The discussions were not merely academic; they served as a rallying cry for innovation and shared learning. Attendees were allowed to ask questions and interact directly with industry experts, making the exchange personal and impactful.
Equally compelling were the sessions that shone a light on community and personal empowerment. For example, the “Before You Push the Bird Out of the Nest” panel provided insights into guiding youth toward independence—a topic close to many hearts. Similarly, interactive sessions such as GutMonkey’s “Be Brave Lab” saw participants step out of their comfort zones, engaging in hands-on activities and sharing personal stories. These sessions demonstrated the value of active community involvement and the belief that living with a bleeding disorder, while challenging, can also foster remarkable growth and resilience.
Rap sessions created another unique space at Symposium 2025. Designed to open up conversations that traditional lectures might not touch, these sessions provided safe spaces for Blood Brothers and Blood Sisters and groups representing the LGBTQIA+ community and the Sangre Latina experience to share experiences through a creative and honest medium. For many, these moments were healing and empowering—a reminder that humor, creativity, and openness can be transformative tools in the struggle for health and acceptance.
The educational offerings were balanced with wellness and relaxation activities. Evening sessions, such as moonlight yoga under the stars, provided a peaceful interlude between more intense discussions and helped attendees de-stress and refocus. The infusion of calm amid a busy agenda and the importance of mental health and holistic care—a message that resonated deeply with every participant.
Building Lasting Bonds & Celebrating Community
At its heart, Symposium 2025 was about building bridges between generations, between patients and healthcare professionals, and between communities that span across the nation. One of the event moments was the Community Kickoff & Awards Ceremony. This session was both a celebration and an inspiration.
The Community Kickoff & Awards Ceremony was a significant moment that celebrated the strength and resilience of the community. It set a lively tone for the rest of the event, reminding every participant that they were part of a larger network of support and shared purpose. The Awards Ceremony, in particular, was a powerful celebration of individuals who made significant contributions, recognizing their efforts that had a ripple effect throughout the community. The applause and cheers that filled the room were a testament to the power of community spirit and the mutual drive to overcome challenges.
Beyond the formal sessions, the Symposium was a festival of connection. Evening events, including the nautical-themed “Anchors Aweigh: A Nautical Night of Celebration,” provided opportunities to mingle, share laughs, and create lasting memories. Families, clinicians, and community members gathered on the picturesque shores of San Diego, partaking in food, music, and activities that were as entertaining as they were unifying. Photo booths, interactive games, and even a driving simulator brought a playful edge to the event, ensuring that everyone, from the youngest teen to the senior member, had a chance to experience the fun of the day.
In closing, we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us in San Diego, from those who traveled afar to the volunteers who ensured every detail was perfect. This isn’t just a recap—it’s a celebration of what we can achieve together, an affirmation of community strength, and a promise that the best is yet to come.
