How did the Hemophilia Memorial at the National AIDS Memorial Grove come to be?
In 2016, National AIDS Memorial Grove reached out asking for support for their “Surviving Voices” project. This is a multi-year oral history project meant to ensure that stories and lessons of the AIDS epidemic are captured, curated, and retained for future generations. The project resulted in 17 videos of community members and leaders. On World AIDS Day 2016, the National AIDS Memorial Grove presented the hemophilia community with the National Unsung Hero Award, for the community’s tragic role in the contamination of the blood supply and in honor of our fight as guardians of the nation’s blood supply. Numerous community members were in attendance, Jeannie White accepted the award and Hemophilia Federation of America (HFA), the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) and the Committee of Ten Thousand (COTT) all participated.
At the World AIDS Day 2016 event, it was announced that the National AIDS Memorial Grove would create a permanent memorial for the hemophilia community affected by HIV/AIDS and HCV within the National AIDS Memorial Grove in San Francisco at Golden Gate Park. HFA and NHF support this project and have partnered with the National AIDS Memorial Grove to help develop and fund its development.

The hemophilia memorial at the National AIDS Memorial Grove is a project of the National AIDS Memorial Grove; HFA supports but does not manage this initiative.
HFA has contributed $40,000 to support the construction of the hemophilia memorial at the National AIDS Memorial Grove. HFA also committed to working with the National AIDS Memorial Grove and NHF to raise an additional $50,000 to ensure the memorial’s perpetuity to honor the memory of those lives lost to HIV/HCV.

A gift of $150.00 or more entitles you to engrave a single name within the Hemophilia Memorial. The Hemophilia memorial includes those who died; those who loved them; and will forever honor their lives.
Will the Names be Verified as People who Passed from HIV/HCV?
As part of the submission process, donors will be asked to verify that the families have approved the submission of their loved one’s name.

Will There Be Another Hemophilia Memorial?
HFA and COTT currently have a memorandum of understanding in place and are actively exploring the options for a memorial on the east coast of the United States. Representatives from each organization are working together to further that initiative.
