Sin darnos cuenta muchas veces queremos “ayudarles” y hacemos las cosas por ellos. Ahh que mucha paciencia tenemos que tener.  Debemos ser conscientes de que en el futuro ellos necesitan hacer las cosas por si solos. Debemos comenzar a temprana edad, a darles responsabilidades de acuerdo a sus capacidades y edades.
Pero, la etapa de los adultos jóvenes. La edad más esperada por nuestros hijos e hijas y posiblemente no para nosotros los padres. Esta etapa para un adulto joven puede ser muy emocionante y a la misma vez de un poco de temor al igual que para los padres. Es momento de afrontar el futuro y los cambios que esto conlleva.
Precisamente en este ciclo nos encontramos mi esposo y yo ahora. Con 24 años de casados y con dos hijas maravillosas Alexa (20) ya en su último año de universidad y Juliemar (17) en su ultimo año de secundaria.  No ha sido fácil dejarlas ir, es una mezcla de muchos sentimientos como: emoción, temor, alivio, expectativa, pero a la misma vez de satisfacción. Podemos ver el fruto de todo nuestro esfuerzo como padres.
La independencia no sucede de la noche a la mañana. Ya sea para ir a la universidad, sacar la licencia de conducir, ir a trabajar, viajar solo, o hasta quedarse en casa deben tener responsabilidad nuestros jóvenes. Esta independencia se desarrolla por etapas. Como mencioné anteriormente desde temprana edad. Pero, ¿Qué hacer cuando ya están en esta edad de jóvenes adultos? Aquà mis consejos:
- Déjelos que tomen sus propias decisiones. No importa que se equivoquen, pueden aprender ya que son experiencias.
- Dele consejos, no les diga lo que tiene que hacer.
- Comunicación, parte vital e importante. ¡Evite pelear! difÃcil ¿verdad?
- Préstele mucha atención y hábleles a cerca de: las amistades, redes sociales, internet, consumo de bebidas alcohólicas, relaciones amorosas, relaciones sexuales, drogas ilÃcitas y fumar. Debe orientarles y dejarle saber que todo acto de irresponsabilidad tiene consecuencias y podrÃa interferir en su futuro negativamente.
- Déjelos que hablen a solas con su doctor. Provea números de teléfonos.
- Que sean responsables de su infusión. (con previa practica)
- Que sean responsables de llamar a la farmacia para el repuesto de su medicamento. Provea números de teléfonos.
- Que sean responsables de hacer sus citas médicas. Provea números de teléfonos.
- Si viven en casa que sean responsables de algún quehacer doméstico y responsables de lavar su ropa y limpiar su cuarto.
- Háblele de la necesidad de ahorrar dinero, de el buen uso de su ATH y el buen uso de su dinero.
Ame a su hijo por sobre todas las cosas, déjele saber lo amado que es, dÃgale que usted está muy orgulloso de el como individuo. Apóyelo, demuéstrele y déjele saber que es especial. Nunca lo compare con otros niños ni con sus hermanos.  Demuéstrele su confianza como persona.  Dele la oportunidad de ser independiente, practique con él. Trate de entenderlo y de comprender sus emociones y frustraciones.

Infusing Love: Our Responsibility as Parents
No doubt we over-protect our children when we try to ‘help’ and do things for them. Ahh, the patience we must have! We must be aware that in the future they need to do things on their own. We must begin working with their independence at early age, giving them responsibilities according to their abilities and ages.
But, then the young adult stage of life hits and, as we all know, it’s a very anticipated time in life. But let’s be honest, it’s a nerve-wracking time for parents. This stage for a young adult can be very exciting, but scary at the same time. It can elicit those emotions for parents as well. It is time to face the future and the changes that this stage in life entails.
My husband and I are now in this cycle. After twenty-four years of marriage, we have two wonderful daughters; Alexa (20) is a senior in college and Juliemar (17) is a senior in high school. It has not been easy to let go and it is a mixture of many feelings like excitement, fear, relief, and expectation. But at the same time, we feel satisfaction. We can see the fruit of all our effort as parents.
Independence does not happen overnight. Whether a child is ready to go to college, take a driver’s license test, go to work, travel alone, or stay home, they should take responsibility. This independence is developed in stages and begins at an early age. But what can you do as parents when you find your children already in this young adult age? Here is my advice:
- Let them make their own decisions. Is okay if they make mistakes, they can learn, those are experiences.
- Give them advice; do not tell them what to do.
- Communication is vital and the most important part. Avoid fighting! (That can be difficult right?!)
- Pay close attention and talk to them about: friendships, social media, internet, drinking, love, sex, illegal drugs, and smoking. We should guide them and let them know that any act of irresponsibility has consequences and could interfere in their future negatively.
- Let them talk to their doctor and provide them with the phone numbers.
- With previous practice, they can be responsible for their infusion. (with previous practice)
- Let them be responsible to call the pharmacy for the replacement of their medication.(Be sure to provide phone numbers.)
- Make them responsible for making their doctor appointments.
- If they live at home, they should be responsible for some housework and responsible for washing their clothes and cleaning their room.
- Tell them about the need to save money and teach good use of credit cards and money.
Love your child above all things, let them know how loved they are. Tell them that as their parents you are very proud of them as an individual. Support them, show them, and let them know that they are special. Never compare them with other children or their siblings. Demonstrate your trust to them as a person. Give them the opportunity to be independent, practice with your children. Try to understand and understand their emotions and frustrations.
And let them grow into the beautiful, wonderful, independent creatures they are destined to be.
