Two weeks ago we introduced you to one of our Policy & Government Relations intern’s, Eric. This week, we are pleased to feature our second summer intern, Camila.

What school do you attend? What is your major?
I am a rising senior at the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia. I am completing a double major in Public Health and Leadership Studies.
Why did you apply for the HFA policy internship?
I applied for this internship for two reasons: one reason was simply that I wanted to learn more about health policy and the other was that this is important work. The bleeding disorders community comes up against many barriers and getting involved in making those barriers easier to get past is something I could not pass up.
What does it mean to be an advocate in the bleeding disorders community?
Being an advocate in the bleeding disorders community means using your position, skills and knowledge to make a difference for community members. An advocate stands up to make changes that will have positive impacts and help to move the community forward.
What excites you most about being at HFA?
I am most excited for the opportunity to attend hearings so that I am able to find out firsthand what is going on with different rules and policies pertaining to the bleeding disorders community. I believe it will be a great learning experience and will help me to understand certain problems more clearly.
What is one thing you hope to get out of this internship?
 I hope to come out of this internship with much more knowledge about policy and an understanding of how I can use my skills to continue to advocate for the bleeding disorders community.
What do you enjoy most about being in Washington, D.C.?
 In Washington, D.C. I am constantly around people who are extremely passionate about what they do and who are doing interesting work. For me that is a truly amazing part of being in D.C.
Anything else you’d like readers to know about you?
I love to travel to countries with very different cultures from my own because I find learning about different cultures important to understanding my own culture. So far out of the countries I have travelled to, the ones that I have found most different from the U.S. are India and Zambia.
