Why AI Matters for HFA and the Community

By Brent Tritt, Vice President of Information Technology, HFA

AI isn’t just a buzzword for technology companies’ offerings and efforts, but there’s a growing role for artificial intelligence in mission-driven organizations as well.

Helping people with hemophilia and their families access resources, strengthen their voices, and build better communities is what HFA is about. AI won’t replace that work; it will enable organizations to do more of it, quicker, and with broader reach. AI is already playing a role in nonprofits’ mission efforts, from streamlining communications to enhancing service delivery for families, helping organizations like HFA make their resources go farther and do better.

Why AI Matters for HFA and the Community

Many nonprofit organizations face challenges, including limited staff, tight budgets, and an increasing need. Affordable AI solutions can be a support where it counts most by giving them time back to do what we do best: serving the bleeding disorders community.

  • Advocacy: Analyze legislation, identify trends, and help us act quickly to defend access to care.
  • Educational Materials: AI can help HFA develop interactive and adaptive educational resources. This could range from treatment plan information at an appropriate reading level for each family to gamified educational modules that make learning about their health more engaging for youth.
  • Communications: Help draft newsletters, tailor outreach, and scale social media presence.

This is not HFA removing the human connection. It’s the opposite: it allows all teams to focus on their core values and prioritize families and community members.

Balancing Innovation with Responsibility

While HFA is excited about AI, they are committed to using it ethically and transparently. Here’s what that means:

  • Data Privacy: All information, whether donor, family, or program participant, is always protected. Adoption of AI won’t alter their rigorous security practices.
  • Equity & Bias: HFA will remain vigilant that tools are used to represent inclusivity and equity.
  • The Human Element: AI may write a message, but a human will review it. AI may analyze data trends, but staff will interpret and apply the findings.

HFA’s approach to AI and other technologies is always to view them as tools to enhance and support, never to replace humanity and connection to their community.

Practical Ways that any Nonprofits can use AI

As HFA closely works with member organizations and industry partners, they also want to share some ways AI can help nonprofits in general:

  • Fundraising: Predict donor behavior and personalize outreach.
  • Program Delivery: Translate resources into other languages, expanding access.
  • Operations: Automate scheduling, data entry, and reporting, streamlining back-office work.
  • Communications: Generate drafts for blogs, newsletters, and social posts in minutes.

This technology isn’t just for national organizations, but also for local nonprofits.

Looking Ahead

A world where HFA can:

  • Proactively meet the needs of the community by identifying unmet needs using data from surveys, programs, and capturing voices.
  • Enable the bleeding disorder community to share impact stories through AI-generated visuals and reports that will wow donors and partners.

This vision is just around the corner. By taking small, strategic steps today, HFA is positioning itself to be a leader in leveraging technology to serve the bleeding disorder community best.

Human Hearts. Smart Tools.

Technology is at its best when it puts people first, which is why HFA uses AI to augment its ability to serve, not replace the empathy, advocacy, and personal care that drive its mission.

By embracing AI in the right way, HFA is helping ensure its staff has more ability to devote to what matters most: providing education, advocating for our community, and capturing the voice of the community.

The future of nonprofits is neither human nor machine. The future is human, using innovative tools.
