Word from Washington: Short Term Health Plans Infographic

On August 1, 2018, the Trump Administration issued a final rule expanding the scope of short-term, limited duration health plans. The rule’s stated aim is to “help Americans struggling to afford health coverage find new, more affordable options.” You can read more about the rule here.
HFA and many other patient advocacy groups think the final rule takes the wrong tack. Short-term plans will not provide adequate coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, like bleeding disorders. At the same time, the wider availability of short-term health plans will siphon more healthy people out of the insurance markets, leaving the remaining risk pool less healthy and more expensive to cover. This trend, too, threatens coverage and care for people with bleeding disorders and other pre-existing conditions.
The following infographic illustrates some of our concerns.
